Beaufort County staff presented a reduced and updated Local Board Approved (LBA) list and two new course proposals to the Academic Committee on Oct. 23: an algebraic applications and fluency course and a mock trial and court systems course. Staff also recommended two school choice program designations: Well Branch Elementary as a STEAM school and Hilton Head Island High School for Visual and Performing Arts.
The district LBA presenter told the committee the algebraic applications LBA is intended for middle and high school students to strengthen conceptual understanding (not just procedural fluency) and that the application is designed to be available district‑wide where schools choose to offer it. The mock trial LBA (Battery Creek High School) includes detailed plans, attorney involvement and supports for multilingual and special‑education students.
Staff said the choice designations were complete and, if approved by the full board, would be available during the choice application window that opens Nov. 10. Committee members praised the course proposals and the detailed LBA applications; a motion carried to forward the course and choice requests to the full board for approval.
Outcome: The committee moved the algebraic applications and mock trial LBAs and the Well Branch STEAM and Hilton Head Island VPA choice applications to the full board for action.
