Litchfield Heritage Commission finalizes 250th plans as fireworks site remains under debate

The Litchfield Heritage Commission confirmed the town's 250th celebration will take place July 25'26 and laid out key logistics for entertainment, vendors and volunteers while continuing a debate over the fireworks location.
Nikki Borgard, who led the planning update at the June 18 meeting, said the main stage acts are scheduled to play from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and that fireworks are planned to begin immediately after the last performance. "The band plays from 7:00 to 9:00," she said, adding that fireworks "should be getting started right after 9:00." Scheduled performers include a Led Zeppelin cover band Saturday night, The Principals Sunday afternoon and singer Samantha Ray on Sunday.
Organizers are asking vendors who sell goods to pay a $30 fee to the Litchfield Event Fund; non-selling exhibitors and Litchfield businesses displaying information will be offered free space. "If someone is selling something, we ask them to make a $30 donation to the Litchfield Event Fund. If they're not selling something, the tables are free," Borgard said. A local theater group will have a booth and sell tickets but will not be charged the fee because it is a Litchfield community group.
Volunteers and promotion remain priorities. Borgard said the event website has launched and provided an event contact email for volunteers: LitchfieldUSA250Party@gmail.com. She asked commissioners to help spread the word through town channels and local business pages.
A key unresolved logistics question is the fireworks site. The commission discussed keeping fireworks on the CHS field, the current plan, versus moving them to the larger, more wooded GMS field at the company's request. Borgard explained that the CHS field would "limit the size of the shells" and raised concerns that wind could carry debris into nearby yards. By contrast, the fireworks company prefers GMS where larger shells could be fired and fewer houses are nearby. The commission said the planning group will continue email discussions and hold a follow-up meeting after the Heritage Commission session.
Planners also described family-oriented programming including a children's parade for decorated bikes and wagons, an arts-and-crafts area run with local artist Alyssa Bean, and a pie contest and chili cook-off. Vendors selling items will pay the fee; businesses displaying information without selling will not.
On financing, commissioners reported roughly $5,000 in town budget funds earmarked for the event and expressed hope that vendor fees and fundraising will leave a positive balance for future events.
The planning committee is meeting immediately after the June 18 Heritage Commission meeting to continue work on unresolved items, including the fireworks site; volunteers and town residents were invited to attend.
