The Hoyt Lakes City Council on Jan. 13 voted to approve a resolution supporting the county’s effort to secure funding for a railroad grade‑separation project in Aurora.
Dean, a city staff member, summarized that the council had passed a similar resolution last year in support of the project but that the county did not receive funding. He said the resolution helps the county access funding to build a bridge over the railroad tracks near Aurora’s Main Street.
Councilor Jarvala opposed the resolution. "I will vote nay today because I think they're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist and they're spending money for something that I don't think they should," Jarvala said, and added concerns that constructing a bridge could hinder access to a nearby A&W restaurant and cut off a street by the hive.
Councilors Matson, Ecman and Mayor Scott voted in favor. The motion carried 3–1.
Supporters on the council said endorsing the county’s application demonstrates regional goodwill and may help Hoyt Lakes secure county assistance for future local projects. The council did not approve funding for the Aurora project itself; the resolution is a statement of support to assist the county in seeking grants or other external funding.
