Council approves downtown Easter Egg Hunt; mayor honors school teams and proclaims Girl Scout Week

The Highland City Council on March 3 unanimously approved a special event application for an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The motion to allow use of the downtown square was made by Councilwoman Barbara Bellm and seconded by Councilman Frey; the four councilmembers voted aye.
Earlier in the meeting Mayor Kevin Hemann recognized Highland Middle School teams: the Dance Team, coached by Elaine Baer and Tegan Beard, won the IDTA State Championship in Jazz and finished second in Lyrical; the Cheerleading Team, coached by Chelsey Kantner and Bailey Wells, finished third at the IESA State Championship and was the highest‑placing school from the area in its conference. Coach Chelsey Kantner told the council the team missed second place by 0.2 points at the IESA meet.
Mayor Hemann also read a proclamation naming March 9–15, 2025, as Girl Scout Week and noted more than 100 girls in the Highland area participate in Girl Scouts. During public forum Councilwoman Sloan raised concerns about ordinance enforcement for large trash items left at curbs and by dumpsters; Director Jackie Heimburger asked that specific addresses or areas be reported so staff could follow up.
Councilman Napper suggested contacting the Highland Area Christian Ministry to open each meeting with a short prayer; Mayor Hemann said the council would look into protocol and whether an ordinance would be required.
