Janesville fire board officers approved; budget and reserves reviewed

The Janesville City Council, during its Feb. 9 joint session that included the township/fire-board portion, approved the list of officers elected at the fire department’s annual meeting and reviewed budget and reserve accounts.
Council members were presented the list of officers elected at the department’s meeting; the motion to approve the slate carried without recorded objection. The council noted that longtime firefighter Jim Jagger stepped down from an officer role after 20 years.
Administrators reviewed the most recent budget figures and cash-balance reports. Staff told the council the expenses in the city-adopted budget decreased compared with 2025 after wages were updated to reflect the year’s experience. On the capital reserve fund, staff explained that the city processes an annual levy resolution that places money into reserve funds and that those funds earn interest in interest-bearing accounts. The administrator said the city expects to finalize transfers following the municipal audit, typically completed by mid-June.
Councilors also reviewed the rural fire fund, which receives revenue from invoicing for rural fire and accident responses and any end-of-year surpluses. The administrator reported the rural fire fund balance and said transfers will be made once the audit confirms final amounts.
The meeting closed the township portion and moved on to regular council business.
