Garden Grove highlights summer events, recognizes first responders and approves routine assessments

Council recognized first responders and city staff for disaster response, presented the city’s summer program calendar and Garden Grove Gems winners, and adopted assessment levies and routine contracting items.
Garden Grove — Council members used the June 23 meeting to recognize city staff and regional partners who supported emergency response and recovery, and to outline the city’s summer programming schedule.
Assistant city manager Ursula Lurmanosa and other staff read long lists of city employees and first responders, thanking them for work during the recent incident and recovery efforts. Council then recessed briefly for a group photo.
Community Services Manager Mark Freeman outlined a packed summer calendar: a USA 250 themed senior barbecue, a USA‑themed concert and Village Green Park flag display on June 30, the summer concert series at Eastgate Park through July 30, Camp Grove day camp at Edgar Park through August 7, expanded aquatics programs beginning with the summer season and plans to transition to year‑round aquatics when Woodbury Park pool construction completes (expected in August). He also described senior center events, family resource center camps and upcoming special events including “Foods of Garden Grove Live” on Sept. 25.
Separately, the council adopted annual assessment levies for the downtown assessment district, street lighting districts and park maintenance district after required public hearings and with no majority protests. Several routine contracts and on‑call consultant agreements for plan review and building‑safety support also were approved to maintain permitting and inspection capacity.
