Council hears request for city support as local group builds response for loose animals

HILLS — During council comments on April 27, Council member Hudachek described a volunteer group formed to respond to loose animals in town and asked the council to consider limited support for short-term holding supplies.
Hudachek said the group created a Facebook page to coordinate volunteers who would attempt to locate and contain loose dogs, provide food and water, and temporarily hold animals at a city location until a volunteer or the contracted provider could take custody. The group has potential donations for food and microchipping, Hudachek said, and asked the city to purchase a kennel and bowls for short-term use.
"They would try to locate and catch the dog and then would hope to bring the dog to a city location and put in a kennel with food and water until either the city or a volunteer is able to take it to our contracted animal provider," Hudachek said.
Hudachek said the group asked for the council’s support in operating a Facebook page and coordinating volunteers. He reported that the Iowa City Humane Society said it would provide a transport quote if Hills obtains the last three years of intake numbers from the Muscatine Humane Society.
The request was recorded during council comments; no formal motion or funding decision was made at the meeting. Council members asked staff and volunteers to follow up with clarifying details and cost estimates before the council considers purchasing equipment.
