Hills council approves consent agenda, flags siren test issue and notes public works updates

Mayor Tim Kemp reported the monthly siren test did not sound and staff suspect a battery issue; the city will retest next month and the fire department maintains a backup siren. Kemp also said the city will post information about the Johnson County Emergency app so residents can receive weather alerts.
Maintenance staff said sewer work on Iowa Street will begin in the coming days and sidewalks are being poured at Hills City Park. The Fire Department reported a strong turnout at a pancake breakfast, serving 1,044 attendees.
During public comment, B. Anderson urged the council to consider including a storm shelter in plans for the city’s school-land purchase. The council discussed several operational items during member comments, including a possible 28E agreement with the Iowa City Humane Society, use of a Hills Paw Patrol Facebook page for loose animals, and questions about parking signs and repainting welcome signs. Boards blocking a manhole on Main and Third streets were identified as needing repainting and clarification of responsibility.
The meeting adjourned at 7:37 PM after a motion from Willette and a second from Knebel.
