Storey County planning staff outlines Design Standards update contract with DOWL

Planning Director Kathy Canfield reported to the Storey County Planning Commission on Feb. 5 that the county has contracted with DOWL Engineering to update the county’s Design Standards ordinance.
Canfield said the existing code was prepared in 2018, at a time when large-scale development was anticipated, and was drafted partly by adapting codes from surrounding jurisdictions. The update led by DOWL will aim to make the standards more appropriate for Storey County conditions, streamline requirements, and provide clearer design options for planned unit developments and similar projects. Canfield did not present an ordinance for adoption; the discussion was informational and no vote was taken.
Canfield also listed ongoing planning projects during the staff report, including a zoning code update focused on definitions (chapter 17.10), a Virginia City parking study, a drainage plan project for the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, and a B Street boundary survey. The commission will consider future agenda items related to these efforts as they are prepared by staff.
