MDOT engineers told the Stonington Selectmen that the Oceanville bridge’s northern piling rests on glacial till and not on solid bedrock, complicating repairs and replacement options. At a July 11 presentation, MDOT staff described structural and aesthetic choices, including granite-facing repairs and the engineering complications of the northern piling. The department said a municipal agreement could pay half the cost of a granite aesthetic facing; MDOT estimated the town’s share at about $100,000.
Residents and abutters raised alternatives, notably whether concrete or other reinforcement could be used, and asked if a one-lane bridge with traffic signals would be considered; MDOT representatives said options were available but that bedrock conditions and piling stability constrained choices. The board agreed to gather community feedback before committing to any municipal funding for aesthetic work and to consult additional engineering opinions as needed.
Selectmen were told a federal $200,000 planning grant for the causeway study is available through prior coordination, which will feed into longer‑term replacement planning. The board scheduled further outreach and fact-finding before any municipal agreement or appropriation.
