Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging: Biwabik has an older population; presentation urges planning for aging in place

A regional aging-agency representative told the Biwabik City Council that about one in three residents are over 60 and 44% over 50, and urged the city to prepare services and infrastructure that help older residents remain in the community.
George Elaine of the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging (a division of the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission) introduced an Age-Friendly Minnesota presentation to the council and attendees and asked the council to consider how the community can support residents as the population ages.
"My name is George Elaine. I work for the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging," Elaine told the council before presenting regional data. He said the Arrowhead data show that in Biwabik roughly one in three people are over the age of 60 and 44% are over the age of 50, figures he said are in line with aging trends in other rural Minnesota communities.
Elaine emphasized that most older adults live independently: he cited a statistic in his slides that about 93% of people 65 and older live independently in their communities, with only small percentages in assisted living or long-term care. He framed age-friendly work as planning to keep services, mobility and housing options available so residents can age in place.
The presentation highlighted that rural communities face different aging challenges than metropolitan areas and encouraged the council to use local planning and community innovation to support older residents. Elaine left time for questions and pointed to regional resources and technical assistance the Arrowhead agency provides to help communities prepare for aging demographics.
