Residents split over Troy intersection plan as truck drivers and pedestrians urge special protections

Joyce Copic, who works on Experimental Farm Road, told council: “the truckers do not want to see a roundabout there.” Multiple business and logistics speakers said large tractor‑trailers and concentrated manufacturing shifts (cited examples include Honda and Pella) make truck access a primary design consideration.
Others urged the roundabout to reduce severe crashes and shorten pedestrian exposure at long crossings. Supporters said the design includes truck aprons and that consultants used swept‑path analysis for large vehicles. Several residents asked for explicit construction staging plans to preserve business access and for design measures — overhead lane signage, pavement markings, rapid‑flashing beacons or raised crossings — to support drivers and pedestrians learning the new layout.
City staff and consultants agreed to include signage and pavement markings in design and noted they modelled large truck movements (WB‑67) when sizing the roundabout. No final decision was made; council and staff said they will weigh public feedback alongside funding obligations before directing detailed design.
