Council warned main sewer lift station is operating on a single pump and staff to return with cost options

Public Works staff informed the council that the city’s primary lift station — which moves wastewater under pressure to the ponds — is operating on a single effective pump after one unit was shut off because it only cycled water without pumping. Staff warned that if the remaining unit fails the city could face service interruptions.
The presentation described extensive deterioration of piping, anchors and associated materials inside the wet/dry well and explained that replacing both piping runs and associated installation work is a substantial undertaking. Staff said the quoted work includes significant materials and installation services and that doing both units while mobilized is more cost-efficient than attempting a single-unit repair.
Staff noted funding for sewer replacement is available in the city’s sewer-replacement and water-replacement funds but cautioned that anticipated outside funding for larger projects could be two to three years away. Council asked staff to return at the August meeting with current fund balances and clearer cost estimates and to explore interim measures to keep the system operating.
A council member asked staff to explain how sewage would be routed while work proceeds; staff described plans to use existing wet- and dry-well configurations and temporary pumping arrangements and said they would coordinate with pump vendors and neighboring entities before beginning any work.
