Regional aging expert tells Biwabik: plan now — one in three residents is over 60

Elaine said that in Biwabik "one in three people are over the age of 60 and 44% of people are over the age of 50," and noted that rural communities tend to age faster than metro areas. He urged local planning to assume longer, healthier lifespans and to prioritize community features that allow older adults to remain independent, such as accessible housing, transportation options and local services.
Elaine reviewed regional statistics that show most older adults live independently (he cited figures that roughly 93% of people 65 and older live independently in their communities) and recommended that the council consider age‑friendly principles as it proceeds with comp‑plan and housing discussions.
Councilors asked questions and discussed how demographic shifts intersect with housing policy and downtown revitalization. No formal action followed the presentation; the presentation was added to the agenda as item 7A and heard in the meeting.
