Hubbard-Radcliffe board approves $307,030 in roof restorations, sets IASB priorities and signs personnel contracts

At its Aug. 19 meeting the Hubbard-Radcliffe Community School District board approved two roof restoration contracts totaling $307,030, adopted IASB legislative priorities for 2024–25, approved several personnel contracts and fundraisers, and received updates on a pending solar installation and staffing needs.
The Hubbard-Radcliffe Community School District Board of Education met on Aug. 19, 2024, in the Radcliffe School library and approved two roof restoration contracts, set legislative priorities for the coming year and confirmed multiple personnel hires as the district prepares for the new school year.
Board President Jacob Bolson called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and the board approved the agenda. The board unanimously approved the consent agenda, including minutes from the July 22 meeting and budget and warrants reports.
In action votes, the board approved the second and final reading of Board Policy 707.5 and 707.5-R1 on internal controls. The board also adopted its Iowa Association of School Boards legislative priorities for 2024–25, naming AEA support, the school funding formula, teacher recruitment and retention, and a statewide health care consortium as top issues.
The board voted unanimously to approve fundraising requests to sell Homecoming beads, Halloween eggs, candy canes, and hot cocoa and cookies to support PBIS incentives, activities and the school store.
On facilities, the board approved bids from Iowa Green Roofing for two elementary-school projects: a $177,200 restoration for the elementary school building roof and a $129,830 restoration for the elementary gym roof, a combined $307,030. The motions to accept the bids carried unanimously.
Superintendent Adam Zellmer reported that photovoltaic panels for the district solar project are on site but installation is awaiting final approval from Alliant Energy. He also said the district has prepared for the upcoming school year but remains in need of bus drivers. Elementary Principal Brian Mangold reported hallway painting and new lockers are complete and that new playground equipment is scheduled to be installed next month. Middle School Principal Kevin Henrichs said registration went well, the middle school schedule will allow daily music and band, and Open House is set for Aug. 21.
Personnel actions approved unanimously included employment contracts for paraeducators Michelle Warnecke and Kelli Nehring, junior high volleyball coach Sadie Backoff, and bus driver Clint Miller (pending required background checks). The board also approved letters of agreement for new teacher mentors Joy Corbin, Sarah Allison, Carole Spiehs, Rebecca Jensen, Ellen Mesch and Kristin Topp.
The board noted the Iowa Association of School Boards main convention on Nov. 21, 2024, and asked members to notify Board Secretary Debra England if they plan to attend. The next regular meeting was set for Sept. 16, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the Success Room at Hubbard School. The board adjourned at 7:32 p.m.
