St. James council approves state polling-place accessibility grant, hires part-time officer and adjusts meeting date

St. James — At its Jan. 20 meeting the St. James City Council approved several administrative actions: it authorized the mayor and city manager to enter a 2025 polling-place accessibility grant agreement with the state of Minnesota, approved the hiring of a part-time police officer, and moved the February council meeting date.
The grant (Resolution 1.26.12) will fund accessibility improvements at the city's polling place, including replacement of doors, installation of push-button door openers, and new wayfinding signage to make the entrance more visible and usable, city staff said. The council dispensed with the full reading of the agreement and approved the authorization by voice vote.
Council also considered Resolution 1.26.11 to set regular meeting dates and times and moved the Feb. 3 caucus/meeting to Feb. 4 to avoid meetings running past 6 p.m.; the motion carried.
On personnel, the council voted to hire Jared Schwans as a part-time police officer at a starting rate of $35 per hour; staff noted his start date was the day of the meeting and the mayor administered the oath of office before the council. Members congratulated Schwans and welcomed his family.
Procedurally the items were approved by voice votes with no recorded roll-call tallies in the transcript. The council adjourned at 5:55 p.m.
