Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation outlines local investments, asks St. James for $1,500 contribution

Aaron Johnson, philanthropy director with the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), presented to the council Oct. 7 on the foundation’s work across 20 counties and asked St. James to consider a $1,500 contribution to the county endowment for fiscal year 2026.
Johnson described SMIF’s activities — grants, loans and technical assistance for early childhood development, entrepreneurship, community foundations and local economic vitality — and cited local impacts. He said SMIF has invested more than $170 million regionwide since 1986 and reported $136,289 returned to the county in recent years through grants and loans. "So to this date, $15 loans have been issued to support entrepreneurs. 154 grants to support community projects, and $3 million has been invested by Smith back here in this county," he told the council (transcript numerals as presented in the packet).
Johnson highlighted specific local projects supported by SMIF including a $10,000 climate-smart grant to St. James public schools, a $4,000 grant to the city for business development training, and COVID-19 relief grants in 2020 to Uniting Cultures and school food-service support. He also noted early-childhood resources provided to local providers and book distributions to Butterfield Odin School.
The foundation requested a modest $1,500 contribution to its county endowment for FY2026; Johnson said these contributions support local grantmaking and technical assistance available to small communities. Council members did not debate the request at length during the meeting.
The council packet included a county fact sheet and an itemized list of past investments and program metrics. The council did not take a final vote on the contribution request Oct. 7; members acknowledged the presentation and thanked the presenter.
