The Humboldt Community School District Board of Education on May 19 approved an amendment to the FY25 budget and a slate of personnel, procurement and policy actions during a regularly scheduled meeting at the district administration office.
The board voted unanimously to amend the FY25 budget and to approve multiple personnel actions, including contract amendments, transfers and new hires for the 2025–2026 school year. Mertz moved and Cornelius seconded the consent agenda that bundled minutes, financial reports, bills, open-enrollment requests and the personnel items; the motion carried unanimously.
Among the personnel approvals were a salary upgrade for Kristy Smith (from MA to MA+15 for 2025–2026), a half-time middle school language-arts contract amendment for Shelley Gerjets, transfers of paraprofessional and instructional staff, and recommended hires for agricultural and coaching positions. The board also accepted resignations from Spencer Ross (head cross-country coach) and Vicki Erst (middle-school para). These personnel moves were approved by motion and recorded as carried unanimously.
The board approved a whole-grade sharing agreement for boys’ and girls’ middle- and high-school sports with Twin Rivers for the 2025–2026 school year. Mertz moved and Burres Youngs seconded the motion; it carried unanimously.
On procurement and contracts, the board set specifications and letting dates for Food Service–Laundry Services (bids to be opened June 4, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.) and Custodial–Laundry Services (June 4, 2025 at 10:15 a.m.) at the District Office. The board also approved a Specialty Underwriters equipment insurance renewal proposal in the amount of $225,905 and added a Drumline Technician to the supplemental salary schedule at Line 19 for 2025–2026; both motions carried unanimously.
The board approved the staff handbook for 2025–2026 and granted the superintendent authority to extend personnel contracts. It also approved a set of policies for first read (including forms and records policies and the district emergency operations plan) and moved a second set of policies for second reading (including grievance procedures, anti-bullying policy, and qualifications for superintendent and administrators); motions on policy items carried unanimously.
What happens next: the district will open the advertised bids on June 4, 2025, and staff will implement the approved personnel changes and policy review schedule ahead of the 2025–2026 school year.
