McPherson County hires contractor for Soddy Road patching, approves road and assessor plans

The McPherson County Board of Commissioners on June 10 approved several operational and road maintenance items, including contracting for asphalt patching on Soddy Road and adoption of routine plans and insurance coverage.
Commissioner Brett Nason moved to hire contractor Luke Franzen, including a five‑man crew and dump trailer for up to five days at $3,000 per day, with the county providing asphalt and skid steer rental; the total cost was capped at $45,000. Commissioner Jeff Arensdorf seconded the motion; Commissioners Nason, Arensdorf and Chairman John E. Bryant voted aye.
Road worker Ed Black reported the crew has been repairing roads and filling holes. The board approved the June Road Plan as presented by Commissioner Arensdorf and discussed a separate easement and roadwork request on Tupper Drive; the Tupper Drive matter was deferred for decision at the July meeting.
The board held a Safety Committee meeting during the session; attendees included Highway Superintendent Tom Werblow, Chairman Bryant, Commissioners Nason and Arensdorf, Ed Black, County Clerk Kathy Hoberg and County Attorney Whitney Schroeder. Werblow distributed flyers and information on machine safety and tire failure.
Commissioner Nason moved to sign the three‑year Plan of Assessment presented by the County Assessor; the plan includes reappraisal of rural residential properties and outbuildings to be conducted in 2026 and 2027 and will be submitted to the Nebraska Department of Revenue. The board also designated CSG as the printer for a joint public hearing postcard if necessary and received the annual audit report for the year ending June 30, 2025 (the audit is on file with the County Clerk).
The commissioners reviewed the NIRMA county insurance billing statement showing a total annual contribution of $33,449 for 2026–2027 (a 4.79 percent increase from the prior year). Commissioner Nason moved to continue insurance coverage through NIRMA with no changes to deductible amounts; Commissioner Arensdorf seconded and the motion carried.
The board received the FY 2026/2027 Region II billing assessment for McPherson County, with the county’s share listed at $878. With no further business the meeting adjourned at 11:00 AM. The next regular meeting is scheduled for 9:00 AM on July 8, 2026 at the McPherson County Courthouse.
