Residents urge Miami Gardens to address sidewalk closures and accessibility during stadium events

Multiple residents told the Miami Gardens City Council on June 24 that temporary sidewalk closures and fencing during major events at Hard Rock Stadium (FIFA, Formula 1) have blocked pedestrian access and posed safety and accessibility concerns.
Christine Malcolm said sidewalks on NW 27th Avenue in front of the stadium and surrounding areas were closed during recent games, forcing residents, transit riders and people with disabilities into the street to reach bus stops. She presented a video to the council showing police improvising to block traffic and said the city should not rely on ad-hoc measures for public safety.
"Accessibility and public safety should not be an afterthought," Malcolm said, and asked the council to establish a formal coordination and post-event debriefing process that includes residents and businesses.
Councilmembers acknowledged the concern; speakers noted that while stadium operations are not wholly controlled by the city, council has a role in coordinating public-safety and accessibility responses and in advocating for residents. Other public commenters raised enforcement-equity concerns, noting residents receive fines for minor sidewalk issues while event operations can effectively close sidewalks for hours.
The council referred the issue to staff for follow-up; residents asked that the city develop a coordination and debrief framework that documents what worked and what did not during events and identifies responsibilities for pedestrian access and safety.
