City staff updates council on events, EMS, trash service and capital work

Parks and events: staff described plans for Sauerkraut Days (Aug. 11–15), including a history scavenger hunt, a movie in the park on Aug. 13, and a slow-pitch tournament and concession arrangements. Registration for flag football and soccer was open and staff said softball registration reached a cap of 12 teams. Staff clarified event logistics including insurance and a fenced beer garden zone with purchases required to consume alcohol on site.
Public works and capital projects: staff reported phase two grading at the sports complex is largely complete, painting and curb work will follow and electrical work for lighting is being coordinated with Musco Lighting and electricians; the group discussed buying pole bases now to avoid later excavation. Staff noted an ADA issue at Jefferson and Market that requires engineering follow-up and that some asphalt work was delayed by rain but expected before Sauerkraut Days.
EMS and public safety: an EMS representative said the new ambulance (designed locally by Rickards) is now in service after an open house. The department has begun petitioning to form EMS districts, intends to distribute explanatory materials to council, and hopes to submit petitions this fall.
Sanitation and finance: staff reminded residents of the garbage contract with LRS (Johnson County) and that collection windows are between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.; contractors now use GPS and cameras for verification and residents should put cans out by 6 a.m. Finance reported the previous budget year was closed, the new budget installed, and that the annual unclaimed properties report is complete with two new claims to address.
The reports were received and staff were asked to return with specifics (bids, schedules, engineering plans) where applicable.
