The Independence Fire Department presented its 2025 annual report during the Jan. 26, 2026, council meeting, and council members and staff flagged an increase in medical-assist calls.
A council member noted the department is handling about "one per week, 52 per year" for medical assists and said that trend "puts a bigger strain on the department." Chief Blake responded that the department has been assisting AMR and that he had scheduled a meeting with AMR, the county and the hospital for Wednesday to review the numbers and staffing needs. "We call, we help, we have no issues with it," Blake said while acknowledging the calls will likely increase and may affect future budget considerations.
Council members and staff discussed that if the county takes over certain funding responsibilities, the department’s obligations and available resources could change; the chief indicated follow-up discussions will occur and that the issue will be considered as budget work begins in early February.
