Commission members spent the bulk of their Jan. 23 meeting outlining a Human Library event intended to increase accessibility awareness.
Aimee Velazquez said the group must complete an application to access materials and reviewed a framework used by a local library, emphasizing paperwork, a timeline and that funds would follow once the application is approved. Members agreed that recruiting three to five volunteer 'books' would balance variety and manageability; J.D. Martz said he was willing to serve as one book.
The commission discussed format details: 15-minute conversations per book inside a single 45–60 minute event, and using three guiding questions to prompt meaningful discussion. Members debated indoor versus outdoor locations and settled that an indoor venue might reduce barriers. Fawn Anderson raised safety and volunteer-training needs for Library Safety Volunteers; J.D. said he would follow up on training and volunteer counts.
On outreach and inclusion, members discussed whether to focus recruiting on accessibility experiences or to include broader intersectional perspectives. Fawn suggested reaching out to a local resident, Chris Anderson, and Aimee offered to help make that connection. Matthew Mitchell, the town liaison, said the Danvers Senior Center should be available depending on date and time.
Next steps recorded in the minutes: Aimee will complete prework on the application and timeline; J.D. will follow up on volunteer training and contact potential participants. The minutes record no firm event date; further planning and paperwork are required before funds can be expended.
