Parents urge review of classroom diversity; committee refers concern, accepts donation and approves student trips

During the Oct. 1 Taunton School Committee meeting parent Adurey Reese spoke in public input to thank the district for improved family and student communication and described positive placement changes for her son. Annie Stamper told the committee she was concerned that classroom diversity was not reflected at Friedman Middle School and said her son did not have a male teacher; Dr. DeMelo noted the committee does not respond in open session and the committee voted to refer her concerns to administration for follow-up.
On administrative business the committee accepted a $4,200 donation from the One8 Foundation to cover travel, conference and lodging costs for three staff members to attend out-of-state professional learning. Mr. Enos moved to accept the donation and the motion passed unanimously.
The committee gave preliminary approval for a THS Abroad trip to Italy in June 2027 so the group could advertise initial fundraising and included check-in requirements in the motion. The committee also granted final approval for the THS ESL Washington, D.C. field trip scheduled Oct. 21-24, which the superintendent had described earlier in his report.
The committee received and placed several administrative reports on file and asked staff to follow up on the referred diversity concern.
