Advocates offer to fund 'Hope Squad' peer-support program for Taunton schools; committee refers proposal to administration

Steven Palm, president of the Casey Project and co-chair of the Bristol County Coalition for Suicide Prevention, addressed the Taunton School Committee during public input on Oct. 15 and proposed that the district implement the Hope Squad peer-support program.
Palm shared his personal experience of losing his daughter and provided committee members with binders describing his organization’s work and project details. He told the committee his organization would cover all training costs associated with adopting Hope Squad.
Committee members thanked Palm for his advocacy and support for student mental health. Mr. Loura moved to refer the proposal to the superintendent and Mrs. Chaves seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The referral sends the Hope Squad proposal to district administration for review of program suitability, staffing and implementation logistics.
