Taunton committee reviews first comprehensive Capital Improvement Plan in years; Two Hamilton Street building committee announced

Assistant Superintendent for Finance & Operations Brenda Moynihan and Director of Facilities Mark Freitas presented the Taunton Public Schools Capital Improvement Plan on Oct. 15, describing the condition, priorities and cost estimates for district buildings.
The plan inventories school construction years, square footage, enrollment, staffing and the condition of major systems including roofs, HVAC and electrical, and it includes cost estimates and timelines for recommended repairs and replacements. Mrs. Chaves praised the report’s clarity and requested that future versions include each school’s maximum capacity to aid enrollment planning.
Members asked pointed questions about older HVAC systems and outdated electrical infrastructure. Freitas said older HVAC systems remain durable and well maintained, and Moynihan explained that electrical upgrades and the 2 Hamilton Street kitchen renovation are coordinated with the City of Taunton and pursued through grant opportunities when available.
Superintendent Cabral announced the formation of a Two Hamilton Street Building Committee to oversee upcoming renovations intended for future grades 5–12 use and said a Statement of Interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) is pending for a potential full window-replacement project. The Long-Range Planning & Public Properties subcommittee agreed to reconvene on Nov. 6 for additional review.
The committee received the presentation and set the item for further review at the Nov. 6 subcommittee meeting.
