Taunton committee cites attendance gains, plans CTE expansion and admissions updates

Superintendent Cabral reported to the Taunton School Committee on Oct. 1 that a district focus on school climate has coincided with an attendance rate of 92.5% and a drop in chronic absenteeism to 21.3%.
Cabral said the instructional leadership team's first meeting concentrated on belonging and examined VOCAL survey results alongside attendance and suspension data to guide interventions. He credited Director of Student Services Stephanie Hoye, the attendance task force, school-based teams and targeted outreach for the improvements.
The superintendent announced the district plans to apply for a Career and Technical Education grant to expand the Construction Craft Laborer program by 40 seats and to update Chapter 74 admissions policies to comply with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) rules adopted in May 2025; the revised admissions policy is expected to be reviewed by the committee this fall and submitted to DESE by Nov. 1, 2025. Cabral also described an Oct. 21-24 learning trip to Washington, D.C., supported in part by the Barr Foundation, and Oct. 24 dedications honoring Donald Cleary and Joseph Martin.
Cabral showed a short video titled "Be Here Because You Belong Here" tied to attendance incentives and said the district will continue monthly focused activities to reduce suspensions and strengthen relationships at the building level.
The committee voted to receive and place on file the Superintendent's Report; no formal vote on the CTE grant or admissions revisions occurred at the meeting, which means both actions will return to the committee for further review.
