Taunton athletics highlights state titles, expands middle‑school offerings with $50,000 grant

Raphael Dowdye, Taunton’s athletic director, told the School Committee on Sept. 17 that Taunton High and its feeder programs posted multiple championship results last school year and that the district is investing to grow middle‑school opportunities.
Dowdye highlighted major team and individual achievements: the softball team won the Division I state championship and the Kelly‑Rex League title and received national recognition from Sports Illustrated and ESPN; the baseball team won the Kelly‑Rex League and qualified for the state tournament; boys volleyball won the Hockomock League and advanced to the Division I Elite Eight; wrestler Elijah Prophete won back‑to‑back state championships at different weight classes; and several track athletes set new school records in the 200‑ and 400‑meter events. Dowdye said Taunton also received the MIAA Sportsmanship Award, which he described as a standout accomplishment reflecting character across teams.
Why it matters: Dowdye said roughly 14% of Taunton Public Schools students participate in athletics and that fall participation increased from about 400 to 422 students, driven in part by improved outreach and multilingual family communication. The district’s athletic programs are positioned as both competitive and a source of student engagement and mentoring.
The district will expand middle‑school sports using a $50,000 grant from the Play Ball Foundation, secured with assistance from Grants Coordinator Tim Clark. Dowdye said the funds will support cross country, lacrosse, field hockey and flag football as feeder programs; high‑school coaches and athletes will partner with middle‑school teams to develop fundamentals and mentorship pathways.
Dowdye also outlined non‑competitive program growth: Unified Sports (in partnership with the Hockomock League) will field basketball, bocce and spring track & field with Unified basketball starting Oct. 6; a student officiating pathway has trained more than 70 students who have collectively earned over $100,000 in the last two years; the Jack Trip Softball Field renovation is complete; and plans exist to refinish a nearly 20‑year‑old gym floor. Strength and conditioning work led by Coach Cabrini Goncalves serves as a daily training resource for up to 50 athletes.
The committee praised the staff and coaches for the program’s accomplishments. Dowdye noted a Hall of Fame ceremony is planned for Jan. 24 (snow date Jan. 25) to induct another class of athletes.
Next steps: Unified basketball tips off Oct. 6; middle‑school expansion work will proceed under the grant and district staff will coordinate logistics and outreach.
