Inwood council approves annual sheriff contract amid safety concerns at Highway 18/182 intersection

The Inwood City Council voted 4-0 Monday to approve an annual contract with the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, authorizing $24,592 for 2024–2025 and $25,056 for 2025–2026.
Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep met with the council to present the contract and to report that deputies have been patrolling the four-way stop at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 182 to collect statistics for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Vander Stoep said he is continuing to communicate with Iowa DOT about safety concerns at that location.
Council Member Chad Evans said he will contact the Lyon County Engineer's office about grinding out the rumble strips and exploring the possibility of installing a flashing red light at the intersection. The council took the contract up for a formal vote after the discussion; Jordan Huyser moved approval and Chad Evans seconded. The motion carried 4-0.
The contract approval formalizes law-enforcement coverage for the coming two fiscal years and continues the department's data collection intended to inform any further traffic-safety changes.
