Ireton council approves 5% water rate increase and $1 monthly garbage fee

The Ireton City Council voted Jan. 20 to raise water rates by 5% and increase the city garbage fee by $1 per month, part of a set of routine budget adjustments approved unanimously.
The council moved the water-rate increase after discussing that the S.S.R.W. water supplier raised its rates last year and could do so again; council members noted Ireton’s water rates had not changed since 2012. Council member TenNapel moved the water-rate motion, seconded by Buyert; the measure passed 5-0.
Council member Eisma moved and Mueller seconded the motion to raise the monthly garbage fee by $1; the vote passed 5-0.
The meeting’s consent items — approved on a single omnibus motion — included acceptance of the treasurer’s report, police log, minutes from Dec. 16 and the Jan. 6 budget workshop, a liquor-license approval for the Ireton Sportsman’s Club pending proof of dram-shop insurance, the employee wage report and claims to be paid.
The council also approved a contract with Holzman for cemetery mowing at $1,100 per visit for the 2025 season (motion Buyert/TenNapel; passed 5-0). Two administrative resolutions were approved: Resolution 25-01 designating the Hawarden Independent/Ireton Examiner as the city’s official newspaper for 2025 (motion Gradert/Eisma; passed 5-0) and Resolution 25-02 setting the mileage reimbursement rate at $0.70 per mile (motion Mueller/Gradert; passed 5-0).
