Topeka council approves $1.05 million Rainy Day appropriation, $150,000 for public safety

The Topeka Town Council on June 8 approved a set of budget moves including an additional appropriation of $1,050,000 to the town’s Rainy Day Fund and $150,000 to the Local Income Tax (LIT) Public Safety Fund.
Council President Adam Lambright opened a public hearing on the Rainy Day appropriation and, finding no public comments, closed the hearing before the council voted to adopt Ordinance 2026-6-8(b). Council members also approved Ordinance 2026-6-8(a), which provides a $150,000 appropriation to the LIT Public Safety Fund, and approved an amendment to the salary ordinance (Ordinance 2026-6-8) that recorded a final Alliance Program pay increase for employee Kevin Wright to $27.01 per hour.
The council handled routine business alongside those budget items: it approved payment of claims, agreed to a $30.99 pool-fill forgiveness fee, and approved minutes from the May 26 council meeting; the June 4 town staff meeting minutes were approved with an abstention noted by Council Member Ray Folk.
The action on the Rainy Day appropriation followed the procedural public hearing required for the ordinance; no speakers registered comments during the hearing. The council’s adoption of the appropriation and the salary update will be reflected in the town’s formal ordinance records.
