Bassett Unified board adopts mobile-device policy and 2026'27 budget, tables i-Ready contract over data concerns
Summary
The board approved a new mobile-phone policy (Policy 5.131.8), the 2026'27 LCAP and the district's 2026'27 budget but voted to table the Curriculum Associates (i-Ready) software agreement after trustees raised online allegations about student usage-data sales and requested the vendor appear before the board.

The Bassett Unified School District board took several major administrative actions at its June 23 meeting, approving a new board policy on mobile communication devices, adopting the district's 2026'27 Local Control and Accountability Plan and approving the 2026'27 budget. Separately, trustees tabled a proposed software agreement with Curriculum Associates (i-Ready) and requested the vendor respond in person to parent concerns about the handling of usage data.
Board President Aaron Simmental called for a motion on the second reading of Policy 5.131.8 (mobile phones on campus). A motion to approve was moved and seconded and carried on roll call.
During the financial portion of the agenda the board approved three finance resolutions relating to temporary interfund cash borrowing, temporary transfers from pooled funds and designating authorized signatures. The board also voted to adopt the 2026'27 budget for Bassett Unified and approved the district's 2026'27 LCAP as submitted.
Trustees then addressed an educational-services contract with Curriculum Associates for the coming year. Several trustees raised recent online claims that i-Ready or related ed-tech products had sold students' usage data to third parties. A trustee said administration contacted Curriculum Associates and that the company had denied the allegations and posted a FAQ on its website.
"They vehemently denied that that was anything that they were involved in," one trustee said when summarizing the district's outreach to the vendor.
Still, trustees said parents and educators deserve direct answers. One board member explicitly recommended tabling the contract until Curriculum Associates can appear before the board; another said the district could still roll the system forward if the vendor provides timely responses and the board is satisfied.
A motion to table the software agreement carried on roll call.
The board set its next regular meeting for July 21, 2026, then adjourned before 8:00 p.m.
Actions recorded on the agenda included multiple roll-call approvals earlier in the evening (policy second reading, LCAP and budget adoption, finance resolutions) and the successful motion to table the Curriculum Associates agreement so the vendor can address data-use questions publicly before the board votes on the contract.
