Bayport council tables Chapter 25 amendment after residents raise concerns

The Bayport City Council voted to table consideration of an amendment to Chapter 25 of the city code — covering prohibited acts, administrative citations and civil abatement — after public discussion and council members’ requests for more stakeholder input.
Council Member John moved to table the ordinance amendment so all five council members could participate and to give neighbors time to coordinate responses; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Several council members said they supported collaborative wording and requested specific feedback from residents before the ordinance returns for consideration.
Council members noted the ordinance language had been revised and circulated, but that some neighborhood stakeholders asked for additional time to prepare a consolidated response. Mayor Hansen and other members said they preferred to give opponents an opportunity to present detailed concerns and to work through specific phrasing changes with city staff prior to a final vote.
No changes to the code were adopted at the Aug. 5 meeting. City staff and interested residents agreed to use the intervening weeks for collaborative review and to coordinate through city staff to set a schedule for revised language ahead of the next meeting.
