Bayport adopts updated fire department guidelines and appoints interim fire chief

The Bayport City Council on July 1 approved amendments to the fire department’s standard operating guidelines and appointed Alan Eisinger as interim fire chief effective Aug. 1, 2024.
Staff said the guideline revisions align membership, hiring, benefits and operations with current legal requirements and the city’s personnel policy, reducing potential liability. A council member who served on the committee that reviewed the changes said the committee’s edits addressed prior concerns; the council adopted the amendments by motion and unanimous vote.
On personnel, staff recommended appointing Alan Eisinger as interim fire chief so the city can continue evaluating whether a full-time chief or another staffing model is appropriate. The interim appointment passed after discussion; the roll call reflected at least one dissenting vote recorded in the meeting transcript (Council member John). Officials said the 2025 preliminary budget will include an earmark for half a year of a full-time chief should the council move in that direction.
What’s next: The council will continue budget deliberations this summer and report back on whether to fill the chief role full-time; staff will implement the updated operating guidelines.
