The LaSalle County Salary & Labor Committee voted on June 24 to approve a $25 per hour rate for a newly proposed intermittent part‑time senior deputy in the coroner’s office, a role the coroner said will address daytime coverage gaps and add supervisory tasks.
The coroner told the committee he has eight part‑time deputies who receive no benefits and that one candidate would be designated a senior deputy to provide daytime coverage when the coroner or chief deputy is unavailable. He proposed the senior deputy be capped at 20–24 hours per week and paid $25 per hour; other deputies currently earn $22 per hour, and the coroner said a planned budget increase would move them to $23.
Committee members discussed timing for budget approval and whether the measure should first clear the public safety committee. Chair Steve Aubrey and others said they wanted the coroner to have the ability to present the proposed pay rate to public safety so the county’s finance committee deadlines can be met.
By roll call, the motion to approve the senior deputy rate as part of the 2027 budget, subject to public safety approval, carried 4–2. The coroner said his overall payroll line is reduced in the current year by roughly $13,000 because of a retirement, which he said offsets the proposed increase in the new classification.
Next steps: the coroner will forward the proposal to the public safety committee and then to the finance committee as part of the 2027 budget process.
