Resident asks board for residential parking at Madison Avenue; engineering referred for follow-up

Joanna Charles addressed the Board during the public comment period and said she lives on the 6900 block of Madison Avenue across from Edison Elementary. She asked the board to install a residential parking sign because she has difficulty finding on‑street parking during school drop‑off and pick‑up times and has no driveway.
"I reside in Avenue, Hammond, Indiana," she said, identifying herself, and described slipping on snow and injuring her back when she could not find parking. The board advised that residential parking designation typically applies to an entire block and encouraged her to gather a petition of neighbors in support and to submit a written request to the law department so staff can review the matter.
Engineering said staff will look at the 6900 block and requested a contact so they could follow up. The Chair formally referred the request to the engineering department for follow-up action.
No decision was made at the meeting; the resident was given guidance on next steps and staff follow-up.
