Police Chief David Pernice told the Borough of Union City Council on Aug. 27 that a new hire approved at a prior meeting has not responded to his attempts to make contact and that he now assumes the candidate may no longer be interested.
Pernice said he will reach out to the regional civil service consortium list—currently about 32 candidates—and coordinate with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams. He reiterated that his department’s preference is to hire two part-time officers, though only one position had been authorized; council agreed to proceed with a search for a single part-time officer.
The chief said he will send out notification letters to candidates and follow up with the Civil Service Commission on scheduling. Council did not take a formal vote on personnel action during the meeting; the update was recorded as informational and council directed the police department to continue recruitment efforts.
The council meeting lasted about 19 minutes and concluded at 6:19 p.m.
