Mayor Dr. Paul Eberline opened a committee update on junk vehicles at the Oct. 6 Grundy Center City Council meeting. The committee reviewed sample ordinances from other communities and recommended several specific changes: adopt a definition for a "hobby vehicle," provide more descriptive notices of violation, allow property owners a hearing, add a disposal option for inoperable vehicles and increase fines for violations.
Clerk Kristy Sawyer was instructed to prepare a draft ordinance updating Chapter 51 (Junk and Junk Vehicles) of the Code of Ordinances for future council consideration. No formal motion or vote was recorded on the substantive changes at this meeting.
The meeting also recorded brief public comments during the public forum. Visitor Rich Ahlberg asked about ditch work at the Sports Complex, and visitor Erik Stensland requested copies of the packet of information for agenda items. Those items were noted by the clerk; the transcript does not record a substantive response or follow-up at the same meeting.
Committee reports followed. The Finance Committee/Clerk noted applications for BIG grants, samples of ordinances addressing underutilized and vacant buildings, an upcoming Wellmark insurance renewal, and that the clerk will attend the IMFOA Fall Conference Oct. 15-17. The Public Safety Committee said a Dodge Charger will be in for outfitting later this week, that Axon cameras will be installed Nov. 11, and the police chief will attend Taser school Oct. 12-14. The Public Works Committee reported fall hydrant flushing Oct. 13-18 and that crews will seed and mat the Sports Complex excavation later in the week.
The council adjourned at 6:55 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.
