City accepts housing study and reports $948,000 Small Cities Development Program award

The Pelican Rapids City Council accepted an updated housing study and heard that the city had been awarded $948,000 through the state Small Cities Development Program, Jordan told the council Sept. 24.
Jordan said CEDA Planning completed the housing study after in‑city visits and data review. “That housing study has been completed and reviewed by the housing study steering committee,” Jordan said, asking the council to accept the report so staff and the Economic Development Authority can turn recommendations into a strategic plan and action items.
Jordan also reported that the city’s SCDP application was successful. The $948,000 award will be divided among commercial rehab and homeowner‑rehab projects; Jordan said the county HRA will contact survey respondents in the order their forms were received and that implementation training will be required before projects can move forward. He estimated project starts could begin in late spring next year.
Council members asked how the study would be used; Jordan said staff will convene a strategic planning session with the EDA, Planning Commission members and council members to prioritize recommendations and identify feasible sites and funding options.
The council approved acceptance of the housing study by voice vote. No vote tally was recorded in the transcript.
