Council approves Lighted Horse Parade route; Main Street parking to be restricted

Pelican Rapids — The City Council on Oct. 29 approved the Lighted Horse Parade schedule and safety plan after organizers described a need to restrict parking on Main Street to protect horses and large wagons.
Organizers Audy Wall and Ever Ballard told the council the route will be the same as last year but that raised medians and wide wagons mean units will use the travel lane. They asked the city to place cones or barricades on Main Street between the roundabouts and suggested a no-parking time (participants recommended after 5:30 p.m. so stores could complete business operations beforehand).
Chief Quon (police) said the department will “make it work” and that a mix of cones and barricades should provide ample clearance for horses and floats. Organizers said wagon rides will operate from a downtown parking lot and that extra downtown security will be provided for the event. The council approved the parade schedule and safety plan by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will coordinate placement of cones and barricades with the street department and finalize permit logistics and signage indicating no parking on Main Street between the roundabouts on parade night.
