The Town of East Haddam Sustainability Team on June 25 agreed to participate in the Trex plastic-film recycling program and discussed practical steps to set up local drop-off points and a pickup schedule. Tanya Borgoin (S3) said the program no longer awards a bench for 500 pounds; instead Trex conducts quarterly drawings for communities that recycle at least 250 pounds.
Tanya outlined potential retail partners where residents could consolidate film plastic, listing Stop & Shop, Big Y, Kohl's and Job Lot, and suggested local spots—libraries and Hometown Market or Shagbark—as collection points. The team discussed signage, reliable volunteers to collect and weigh materials weekly or monthly, and using an existing scale at Shagbark for reporting totals to Trex.
Why it matters: the program requires a dependable volunteer system and clear signage; members emphasized avoiding overflow or litter at drop-off points by coordinating pickup responsibilities. The committee agreed to secure containers and signage, compile a list of volunteers willing to rotate pickups, check container costs, and explore whether sustainability funds can cover equipment purchases.
Next steps include ordering or repurposing secure containers, creating volunteer pickup rosters, setting at least one library site as a pilot, and reporting tonnage to Trex for eligibility in quarterly drawings. The committee will revisit logistics once container costs and volunteer commitments are confirmed.
