Board OKs $120,500 for Willow Court realignment design ahead of planned quiet zone

The Hammond City Board of Public Works and Safety approved $120,500 in Capital Improvement Board funding on Feb. 19 to pay First Group Engineering to design a realignment of Willow Court at State Street.
Engineering staff told the board that police reports last year showed numerous roadway departures at the Willow Court intersection and that a former traffic signal had been removed, leaving a “kink” in the road. "We really basically need need to straighten Willow Court out so that stops," staff said, adding the design work is being advanced to prepare for a Norfolk Southern quiet zone application that includes several adjacent crossings.
CIB approved the funding the previous night, and the board approved the agreement and corresponding allocation by voice vote.
Staff said interim measures (permanent type-three barricades) have reduced the roadway departures while the realignment and related quiet-zone planning proceed.
