Kanawha public works reports lagoon leak, DNR notified; brief boil advisory issued and lifted after testing

The Kanawha superintendent of public works reported operational incidents and upcoming maintenance at the city’s April 14 council meeting.
Superintendent Ryan Oleson told the council an abandoned pipe caused a leak in Lagoon Cell 2. City crews pumped the contents back into Cell 1, removed and capped the abandoned pipe, and notified the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Oleson said a similar abandoned pipe in Cell 3 will be addressed during an upcoming lagoon drawdown expected to take several weeks.
Oleson also reported a water main break at East 5th Street and Locust that occurred during a fire response and temporarily affected water availability in a limited area. The city issued a precautionary boil advisory for that area; subsequent testing confirmed the water was safe and the advisory was lifted. He said fire hydrant flushing is scheduled for next week. Oleson added he will attend water treatment training in Cedar Falls and plans to take the Grade 2 certification exam.
