The Kanawha City Council unanimously adopted the fiscal year 2026-27 annual budget and approved a separate amendment addressing unplanned expenses.
At a public hearing opened by Mayor Randy Yeakel, there were no public comments on the proposed FY2026-27 budget. Council member Tim Lodin moved to adopt Resolution #BUD26-27, which the council approved by voice vote; Jessica Fowles seconded. The resolution directs the city clerk to file the required budget documents with the state.
The council then opened and closed a hearing on a proposed amendment to the current fiscal-year budget. Council member Phyllis Jordanger moved to adopt Resolution #BUDAMEND26 to include unplanned expenditures the council described as increased public safety operating costs and higher clerk benefit costs after switching from single to family health insurance; Dana Kraft seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The council also noted that an insurance review was tabled for later consideration. Neither hearing drew public comment. The council’s action completes local approval; the clerk is responsible for making the statutory filing required by law.
