Kalona council approves agenda, hires laborer, increases chicken limit and advances parking ordinance

Kalona Mayor Mark Robe presided over a regular council meeting on Aug. 5, 2024, where members approved the agenda and minutes and allowed the listed bills.
On a motion by Spitzer, seconded by J Schmidt, the council approved the meeting agenda; the July 15, 2024 minutes were approved on a motion by J Schmidt, seconded by G Schmidt. All routine motions passed unanimously.
The council approved payment of the itemized vendor list and recorded transfers among city funds, including payments to Alliant Energy and engineering services. On a motion by Beisheim, seconded by Spitzer, the bills were allowed with all voting yes.
Personnel action: Council approved hiring Nicholas Hull as a general laborer starting Aug. 12, 2024, at an annual starting salary of $42,000. The motion was made by Spitzer and seconded by Bender and passed with all five members voting yes.
Code and permitting changes: The council amended the chicken permit application to allow six chickens per application rather than four; the motion by G Schmidt, seconded by Spitzer, carried unanimously. Council also approved Ordinance No. 2024-354, adding a No Parking zone on the south side of H Avenue (east 444 feet). The ordinance passed its first reading after a unanimous roll-call vote (Bender, J Schmidt, Greg Schmidt, Spitzer, Beisheim).
