Jesup Community School District board approves transfer from flexibility fund to support Spanish curriculum

The Jesup Community School District Board of Directors voted June 9, 2025, to direct funds from the district’s Flexibility Account to cover a Spanish curriculum for the 2025 fiscal year. The board approved the resolution at its regular meeting in the PreK-8 Media Center after a public hearing that produced no comments.
The resolution text presented at the meeting lists the expenditure as $86,657.67, while the motion recording the board’s approval lists a transfer of $86,567.67; the district did not clarify the discrepancy on the record. Board member Clayberg moved the resolution and Jung seconded; the motion carried with all five members present voting yes (Bell, Clayberg, Jung, Masteller, Youngblut). Miller and Trumbauer were absent.
Superintendent Kohagen also updated the board on the North Addition project and the timing of planned summer renovation work. Kohagen told the board the district recently received state funds intended for hourly support staff and decided to pay those employees a bonus on the June payroll, with bonus amounts tied to individual attendance.
The board approved a consent package that included several technology and security purchases, vendor contracts, bids and personnel changes. Items listed in the consent agenda included two Embarkit orders (sensor/install for $19,941.73 and a door controller/security package for $19,913.47), an order for 100 Chromebooks from Sterling Computers for $27,563.00, change order #16 for $2,283.22, and a change changing asphalt depth (to 4 inches) estimated at $67,412. The consent items also included multi-year student-teaching agreements with Buena Vista University and Luther College, a support agreement with Grant Wood for Infinite Campus, a DOT drug-testing contract with Medical Enterprises, and the district’s insurance renewal. The milk, bread and fuel bids were awarded to Prairie Farms, Bimbo and Consolidated Energy respectively (a Prairie Farms recommendation was noted by an Amber during the bid discussion).
The board approved increases to breakfast/lunch and registration fees on a motion by Youngblut, seconded by Clayberg; that motion also passed unanimously. The board later approved a certificate of substantial completion related to district work and adjourned the meeting at 6:35 p.m.
The board did not record any public comment on the Flexibility Account transfer during the public hearing. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for July 14, 2025.
