Union City Borough Council voted Aug. 13 to award a $22,295 contract to Mansfield for repairs at Municipal Lot #1, where a sinkhole removed approximately 68 feet toward the Municipal Authority pipe bottom.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips told the council that engineers recommended replacing a 24‑inch clay tile in the sinkhole area, reconnecting pipes feeding the hole to the 24‑inch line, installing a larger catch basin next to the sinkhole and replacing roughly 10 feet of pipe. Two estimates were presented: Mansfield at $22,295 and McLallen Construction at $23,450; both bids required the borough to provide a truck during the work.
The motion to hire Mansfield — moved by Councilor Steadman and seconded by Councilor Osborn — carried unanimously. The council did not discuss a project start date during the meeting; Bob Carpenter (Insight) and engineer Tim Wells are listed in the discussion as having provided recommendations and suggestions for lining pipes and repair sequencing.
Council accepted the lower estimate and approved the repairs to restore the lot and address the sinkhole.
