Kelley council approves consent agenda, hears $85,000 storm-water estimate and schedules variance hearing

The Kelley City Council on July 9 approved the consent agenda, received financial reports and heard updates on a series of local projects.
On a motion by Brendan Burtnett and a second from Ben Adams, the consent agenda was approved, including the July 9 agenda, minutes from June 11 and June 27, and claims totaling $11,876.35 paid (the motion carried 4–0). The council’s expense breakdown listed General $7,285.81; Road Use $111.92; Water $454.11; Sewer $4,024.51; and Storm Water $0.00. Jennifer Davies reported June 2024 total revenues of $27,253.68, including Local Option Sales Tax of $4,106.86 and Water/Sewer/Storm receipts of $18,578.72.
Mayor Rick Terrones requested updates on the telephone booth, playground equipment and storm-water planning. Public works staff reported routine maintenance: Gary Milam said crews had flushed hydrants, were finishing mulch at the playground and were cleaning the volleyball court. Brandt Murry told the council preliminary cost estimates for the storm-water project will be approximately $85,000; the minutes state details will be finalized and bid requests issued.
In other business, City Clerk Jennifer Davies said a variance request for 917 Giddings requires a public hearing and public notice; the hearing was set for Tuesday, July 23. Ron Finch volunteered to spray weeds on the ballfield. Davies also said the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is starting a tree inventory of city-owned property. Council was reminded that Kelley’s 150th anniversary is scheduled for 2025.
The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m. on a motion by Ben Adams, seconded by Brendan Burtnett.
