Kalona council adopts no-parking ordinance near H Avenue school

The Kalona City Council on Aug. 19 adopted Ordinance No. 2024-354, adding a no-parking restriction on H Avenue bordering the school.
The ordinance specifies no parking on the east side of H Avenue beginning at 6th Street on the south side and extending 444 feet east (the east side of 7th Street). The restricted hours are 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday during the school calendar.
Councilmember Bender moved to waive the second reading and move the ordinance to third and final reading with the stated amendment; Spitzer seconded and the motion carried. The council then approved the third and final reading on a motion by Spitzer, seconded by Bender. When the roll was called for adoption, councilmembers Bender, G Schmidt and Spitzer voted yes; J Schmidt and Beisheim were absent. Mayor Mark Robe declared the ordinance duly carried.
City officials said the restriction applies during the school calendar to maintain traffic and pedestrian safety near school hours. The ordinance will take effect according to the city's adoption rules.
