Katie Rasmussen, the Chamber Main Street Director, told the Grundy Center City Council on Oct. 20 that other Iowa communities use vacant‑and‑underutilized‑building ordinances and associated forms to help owners maintain storefronts and reduce the risk that a single disaster could affect an entire block.
Rasmussen described materials and sample ordinances from the Main Street Iowa Fall Conference and said such tools can be used to educate building owners about upkeep and the value of their assets. She emphasized that setting a local standard for maintenance would help protect the downtown business district from blight and concentrated loss.
Mayor Paul Eberline asked the council to form a review committee that includes council members, public works staff, building inspectors and Chamber Main Street representatives to examine model ordinances and recommend whether Grundy Center should adopt a local code. Council took no formal ordinance action at the meeting; Rasmussen’s materials and the committee’s work are expected to guide future consideration.
The discussion closed without a vote; the council did not set a formal deadline for the committee’s report but listed the matter for further study alongside other code and ordinance updates.
